ZEE Entertainment reports 11.5% decline in Q1 ad revenue amid rising expenses: Report
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited reported advertisement revenue of Rs 6,714 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, down from Rs 7,585 million in the year-ago quarter and Rs 8,080 million in the previous quarter. The company’s advertising revenue declined 11.5% year over year and 16.9% sequentially. The company also reported advertisement and publicity expenses of Rs 4,468 million, compared with Rs 2,752 million a year earlier and Rs 4,324 million in the previous quarter. At the same time, subscription revenue increased to Rs 11,369 million from Rs 9,817 million in the year-ago quarter and Rs 10,247 million in the previous quarter. Other sales and services revenue stood at Rs 990 million, compared with Rs 846 million a year earlier and Rs 1,921 million in the previous quarter. ZEEL’s advertising and publicity expenses increased 62.3% from the year-ago quarter, indicating that the company spent more on advertising and publicity even as advertising revenue declined. The company recorded total income of Rs 19,385 million during the quarter, compared with Rs 18,498 million in the corresponding quarter last year and Rs 21,011 million in the previous quarter. The results do not provide a separate breakdown of advertising revenue between television, digital or individual platforms. ZEEL reported its business under a single reporting segment, ‘Content and Broadcasting.’ The results point to a quarter in which the company’s advertising business remained under pressure despite higher spending on advertising and publicity. The company’s subscription revenue provided support to the overall revenue performance, while advertising remained below both the year-ago and previous-quarter levels. Subscription revenue supports Q1 performance The company reported profit of Rs 743 million for the quarter, compared with Rs 1,437 million in the year-ago period. In the previous quarter, it had reported a loss of Rs 1,037 million. Revenue from operations stood at Rs 19,073 million, comprising advertisement revenue, subscription revenue and other sales and services. ZEE also invested Rs 1,157 million in compulsorily convertible debentures issued by Phantom Digital Effects Limited and Rs 100 million for a 33.33% stake in Culture of Real Experiences Private Limited. It transferred its business of syndicating and licensing content to wholly owned subsidiary ZI-IPR Enterprises Limited with effect from April 1, 2026. JioStar regulatory battle persists The company continues to face regulatory and legal matters, including an ongoing SEBI investigation and a dispute with JioStar over ICC broadcasting rights. The report states that JioStar has claimed damages of USD 1,097 million, while ZEE has filed a counterclaim of USD 8.06 million. The final evidentiary hearing in the arbitration was completed after the quarter, with both parties required to file post-hearing briefs.
