Ravenshaw teacher-MLA row intensifies over warden transfers; RUTA seeks notification withdrawal

The ongoing dispute between teachers and a local MLA at Ravenshaw University in Cuttack intensified on Friday, with the Ravenshaw University Teachers’ Association (RUTA) strongly opposing the varsity authorities’ decision to replace all hostel wardens. RUTA members submitted a memorandum to the university Vice-Chancellor, demanding reconsideration of the decision, which they alleged was taken without consultation with the teachers’ association. A meeting between RUTA members and the Vice-Chancellor was also held at the latter’s office to discuss the issue. The teachers’ association raised three major demands. It sought withdrawal of the new notification issued by the Vice-Chancellor’s office on August 13 (yesterday) concerning the hostel/residence committee. RUTA also demanded prompt action over what it described as the alleged humiliation of teachers and urged the Vice-Chancellor to send another communication to the State government detailing the developments in the matter. During the meeting, RUTA raised allegations concerning ‘misconduct’ by Cuttack Sadar MLA Prakash Sethi towards a former chief warden. The association also objected to an earlier university notification issued a couple of days ago, through which changes were made to the residence committee. RUTA demanded that the notification be withdrawn and that the university hold fresh discussions with the residence committee to ensure smooth management of the hostels. The association warned that it would be compelled to take further steps if appropriate action was not taken on its demands at the earliest. The RUTA media coordinator said the association expects the university authorities to address the concerns promptly. The Vice-Chancellor’s response to the allegations and demands was not immediately available.
