The residents claimed that a dispute had earlier emerged over who should collect rent from the occupants. The hostel residents told the woman that they had previously been paying rent to Manoj Mohanty and his sister. Following this, an argument allegedly broke out, with the owner’s wife demanding payment. Residents further alleged that after the confrontation, water and electricity supplies to the hostel were disconnected. They also claimed that the hostel’s occupants were locked inside from outside during the incident. “I have been staying at Manoj Mohanty’s hostel for the last three years. Due to their family issues—we don’t know exactly what the issue is—his wife and daughter have been harassing us over their personal matters for the past three to four months in many different ways,” the injured, Suparna Jena, told OTV. “For the last two to four days, they have cut off electricity and water supply to the hostel. So, when we raised our voice—we on the ground floor are affected the most because there is absolutely no water supply on the ground floor—holding a grudge against us for raising our voice, they entered our room and attacked us,” injured Suparna stated. “She (the landlady) kept coming repeatedly and demanding that we pay the rent to her. When we refused, saying that we would only pay the person, Manasi Mohanty (Manoj’s sister), we have been paying for the past three years,” the hostel inmate added.
