NECU Political Science programme explores sound as a way of knowing

Dimapur, August 23 (MExN): The Political Science Program of North East Christian University (NECU) organised a brainstorming session on ‘Sound as a Way of Knowing: Epistemologies of Listening among the Nagas’ at Shokiye Hall, CARS Building, NECU, Burma Camp on August 21.Dr Yaoripam Makang, Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Tübingen, Germany, was the resource person for the session. Speaking on the theme, Dr Makang explored “sound” as a means of understanding lived experiences that are historically and culturally embedded. He reflected on how listening and sound can offer ways of engaging with experiences and knowledge beyond conventional forms of understanding.Illustrating the relationship between sound and power, he discussed how state-sponsored events such as the Hornbill Festival can shape power relations through the selection and presentation of particular sounds. The discussion, he noted, opens up questions for students of politics on who gets to select, represent and define sound in public spaces.The session was hosted by Hokashe Shohe, 3rd Semester MA student of the Political Science Program. The keynote address was delivered by Khrielhoumenuo Suokhrie, Coordinator and faculty of the Political Science Program, while Zubeni Lotha, faculty, Political Science Program, delivered the vote of thanks.
