Perim Island, also known as Mayyun, sits at the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial gateway between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. With the Strait of Hormuz severely disrupted, Saudi Arabia has diverted oil exports toward the Red Sea, making Bab al-Mandab even more important for global shipping and energy supplies. Regional sources told CNN that Iran-backed Houthi forces were pushing toward Mokha, around 50 miles north of Perim.
