The action followed allegations that excessive chemicals were being used to artificially ripen bananas. The source report says large quantities of chemicals were seized and 15 warehouses were sealed. Food safety officials said chemicals being used directly on fruits could contaminate food and pose risks to human health. Penalties were imposed at some warehouses, while materials allegedly being used outside prescribed rules were seized. Officials also said the warehouses would remain sealed for some time.
