Bangladesh's ruling BNP nominates party stalwart Mirza Fakhrul as presidential candidate
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated as the presidential candidate by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. The election follows the resignation of Mohammed Shahabuddin on health grounds last month. Alamgir resigned from his party posts after his nomination for the upcoming presidential election. Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad is also contesting the presidential election as an opposition candidate. The BNP holds a significant majority in Parliament, positioning Alamgir for the presidency.
