Air New Zealand Appoints Former Air India Chief Campbell Wilson to Board

Air New Zealand said on Wednesday it will appoint former Air India chief executive and managing director Campbell Wilson and former chief financial officer Robert McDonald to its board as the airline confronts a series of operational and financial challenges. The appointments will take effect on September 24 , when the New Zealand national carrier holds its annual shareholders' meeting. The additions come at a difficult time for the airline, which is dealing with delays in aircraft deliveries, ongoing engine problems and higher fuel costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East. Wilson brings decades of aviation experience Wilson, who was born in New Zealand, brings more than three decades of experience in the aviation industry to the Air New Zealand board. He stepped down as chief executive of Air India in early April after almost four years in the position. His tenure came as the Indian airline dealt with persistent financial losses and increased regulatory scrutiny following last year's crash that killed 260 people. Before joining Air India, Wilson was the founding chief executive of Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines. His career at Singapore Airlines also included a lengthy period at the group, where he helped establish Scoot's distinct identity and informal culture within a wider airline organisation traditionally associated with a more conservative approach and premium service. Wilson's experience across both full-service and low-cost aviation businesses could provide Air New Zealand with additional expertise as the carrier works through operational pressures and changes in the global airline industry. McDonald adds financial and governance experience McDonald brings a different area of expertise to the board. He is currently chair of Contact Energy and serves as a director at FleetPartners Group. His corporate and financial experience comes as Air New Zealand manages higher operating costs while dealing with aircraft delivery delays and persistent problems affecting aircraft engines. The two appointments will broaden the airline's board experience at a time when Air New Zealand is navigating a challenging operating environment. The carrier has faced pressure from disruptions to its fleet, while elevated fuel prices have added to costs. The impact of the Middle East conflict has further complicated the outlook for fuel expenses. Wilson and McDonald are expected to formally join the board following shareholder approval at the annual meeting on September 24, adding aviation and financial expertise as Air New Zealand works to strengthen its position amid continuing industry pressures.
