Power Ministry Taps Captive Thermal Plants to Bridge Non-Solar Hour Shortage
On September 9, 2026, India’s total energy shortage during non-solar hours shot up to 7,717 MW while the daytime demand of over 267 GW was successfully met. Solar might have saved the day during daylight hours this month but come sundown, shortages have been common since coal-based thermal and hydel power are unable to ramp up enough generation to cater to the demand. A poor monsoon has meant lower hydro generation this year amid an increase in power demand. Adding to the challenge is the absence of adequate energy storage.
