Long-awaited Nayagarh sugar mill to resume operations soon: Odisha CM

The long-awaited demand for reopening Nayagarh’s sugar mill is set to become a reality, with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announcing that the facility will soon resume operations, official sources said on Friday. The Chief Minister said the State government is working to fulfil the long-standing demand of the people of Nayagarh district. He added that a public sector undertaking (PSU) has already expressed its willingness to operate the sugar mill. The sugar mill is located at Panipoila in Balugaon panchayat of Nayagarh. Established in 1987, the facility stands on around 143 acres of land. Its revival is expected to bring a fresh boost to economic activities in the area and benefit people associated with sugarcane cultivation and related sectors. The announcement has raised hopes among residents, who have been seeking the reopening of the mill for a long time. In another development concerning the district, Nayagarh Bruttang Irrigation Project has also received approval. According to Chief Minister Majhi, work on the irrigation project is expected to begin soon. The revival of the sugar mill, along with the upcoming irrigation project, is likely to be significant for Nayagarh’s agricultural and rural economy. The government’s decision is expected to provide renewed opportunities for farmers and people dependent on agriculture-related activities. Further details regarding the PSU that will operate the sugar mill and the timeline for its reopening are awaited. “We are continuously making plans to give more (funds and infrastructure development) to this district. People have also had a long-standing demand, which they have presented to us many times. MPs and MLAs have also asked when the Nayagarh Sugar Mill will be re-established. Regarding this demand, the Government has taken a complete decision,” the CM said while addressing a huge gathering. “With the assistance of the Central government, through a central govt PSU, which is Indian Potash Limited, and with the cooperation of the Union Ministry of Cooperation, and the blessings and support of the Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah Ji, we are going to re-establish Nayagarh Sugar Mill. We make this announcement, and the project is definitely going to start in a very few days,” CM Majhi added.
