Anatoli Bugorski survived one of the strangest particle accelerator accidents ever recorded. In 1978, a high-energy proton beam from the Soviet U-70 accelerator passed through his head. The accident caused severe radiation damage. It also caused permanent hearing loss, facial paralysis and seizures. Yet Bugorski lived. He later completed his PhD and returned to particle physics.
