During Apollo seventeen, Commander Eugene Cernan broke the rover's rear fender extension. Astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt repaired it using four lunar maps and clamps. This improvised fender successfully functioned for the remainder of their moonwalks. The makeshift repair allowed the lunar rover to continue its crucial scientific operations. This resourceful fix is now preserved at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
