Gaurav Gogoi Flags Flood Relief Irregularities, Demands Action Against Nagaon DC
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday, August 29, accused the Assam government of serious irregularities in the distribution of flood relief materials and financial assistance to affected families. He also demanded the immediate suspension of Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma, alleging political interference in the functioning of the district administration. Addressing the media, Gogoi alleged that irregularities had taken place in the distribution of relief materials in Sivasagar and Nazira. He questioned the quality of tarpaulins distributed among flood-affected families, claiming that several of the materials were of poor quality and unsuitable for use. According to the report, the tarpaulins were procured using government funds. He alleged that discrepancies in their procurement and subsequent distribution pointed towards a possible scam involving flood relief resources. Gogoi also raised allegations concerning the distribution of cooking oil as part of the flood relief assistance. He claimed that the oil supplied to affected families had been repackaged before distribution and alleged that government officials were involved in the process. He further questioned the implementation of the government’s Rs 15,000 one-time financial assistance scheme for severely flood-affected families. He alleged that beneficiary lists included fake Aadhaar numbers, raising concerns over the verification of beneficiaries and the manner in which relief funds were being disbursed. During the press interaction, Gogoi also made indirect remarks concerning Assam minister Pijush Hazarika, referring to an allegedly expensive vehicle worth around Rs 1.5 crore and a costly wristwatch. Gogoi subsequently targeted Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma, alleging that the officer was using his official position to favour the BJP. He called for Sharma’s immediate suspension and demanded action over what he described as political interference in the functioning of the district administration. The allegations come amid ongoing concerns over the distribution of flood relief and assistance to affected families across Assam.
