Ex-MLA Samarjit Haflongbar Urges Assam Govt To Regularise 9 Haflong College Lecturers
Assam: On the eve of Teachers’ Day, former MLA and former Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), Samarjit Haflongbar , has urged the Assam government to take immediate steps to regularise nine contractual lecturers serving at Haflong Government College in Dima Hasao, Assam . In a statement issued on Friday, Haflongbar highlighted that the nine lecturers have reportedly been serving the college for around 13 years without regularisation or adequate service security. Haflongbar said the lecturers were appointed following a decision of the Assam Cabinet during 2009-10. A Gazette Notification subsequently empowered the Governing Bodies of Diphu Government College and Haflong Government College to undertake the selection and appointment of lecturers, subject to approval from the state government. According to the former legislator, the concerned lecturers possess the required qualifications, including SLET and PhD, as applicable, and have continued to provide academic services to students at Haflong Government College. He also pointed to the importance of Haflong Government College as a higher education institution in Dima Hasao, a hill district administered under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian constitution. Haflongbar said the lecturers had spent a significant part of their careers serving students in the district, with many of their former students going on to become government officers, doctors, engineers, public representatives and professionals. He appealed to Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu and the state government to give urgent and sympathetic consideration to the matter and take appropriate steps towards regularisation and permanent service security for the nine contractual lecturers. He said their long and continuous service, qualifications and the educational needs of Dima Hasao should be considered while addressing the issue. Haflongbar also said that recognising teachers on Teachers’ Day should go beyond words and include acknowledging their years of service and ensuring their dignity, livelihood and future.
