Assam: Govt Engineer Accused of Sexually Abusing 17-Year-Old Domestic Worker

A serious allegation of sexual abuse has been levelled against a government official in Assam. Executive Engineer Shantanu Kumar Nath, posted with the Public Works Housing Department and serving under the North Kamrup Regional Division, has been accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old domestic worker. The minor girl had been working as a domestic helper at his residence in Pally, Palashbari, after she was brought from Sonitpur several years ago. The incident came to light after the girl allegedly fled from his residence on the night of August 24. Reports stated that she initially took a bicycle from Pally Chak and attempted to escape towards Malipara. However, she reportedly fell from the bicycle after travelling some distance. The allegations have reportedly gained further significance following a report by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Kamrup, which is said to have highlighted allegations of repeated sexual abuse of the minor at Nath’s residence. The girl was taken into custody by Azara Police on the night she allegedly attempted to flee. She is currently reportedly under the care of an organisation named Seven Star at Kahilipara in Guwahati under the supervision of CWC, Greater Guwahati. According to the report, the minor had earlier complained of sexual harassment by Nath. She reportedly decided to flee the house after allegedly being unable to bear the situation any longer. Although the girl’s family has reportedly not yet filed an FIR at Azara Police Station, questions have also arisen over her exact age. Medical examinations are reportedly being conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMC) to establish her age.
