Assam: Cachar College Hijab Row Escalates, NSUI Confronts Police in Silchar

Protests gripped Silchar on Thursday as the controversy surrounding the wearing of hijab at Cachar College escalated, with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staging a protest against the incident. The protest comes two days after a confrontation reportedly broke out between students affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and NSUI at Cachar College over the wearing of hijab on campus. NSUI alleged that several of its student members were injured during the altercation. In protest against the incident, NSUI members attempted to take out a rally from the Silchar District Congress Committee office on Thursday. However, police personnel stopped the protesters from proceeding with the rally, following which the situation turned tense. During the confrontation, MLA Zuber Enam, along with several NSUI protesters, reportedly got involved in a heated altercation with the police as the protesters attempted to move forward. The situation intensified as the demonstrators tried to cross the police barricades. Despite the police restrictions, the protesters eventually managed to move out of the District Congress Committee office and proceeded towards the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cachar district. The NSUI members then staged a protest outside the SP’s office, raising slogans and demanding action over the alleged incident at Cachar College. The demonstration continued for several hours, with the protesters demanding adequate security for students on the college campus and appropriate action in connection with the reported clash. Later, a delegation of NSUI representatives, led by MLA Zuber Enam, met the Superintendent of Police, Cachar , and submitted a memorandum outlining their demands. Speaking during the meeting, Enam called for measures to ensure the safety and security of students at Cachar College and urged the authorities to take appropriate action over the incident. Following assurances from the Superintendent of Police regarding the demands raised by the delegation, NSUI finally called off its protest. The incident has brought renewed attention to the dispute at Cachar College and the demand for stronger measures to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for students.
